Many of us carry trauma patterns that shape our thoughts, behaviors, and relationships in ways we may not even realize. These patterns often develop as survival strategies in response to past experiences but can become barriers to living a fulfilled and connected life. By bringing awareness to these patterns and engaging in somatic practices, we can begin to shift them and create new ways of being.
Common Trauma Patterns
Trauma patterns manifest in various ways, often influencing how we relate to ourselves and others. Here are some common ones:
People-Pleasing – Constantly prioritizing others' needs over your own, fearing rejection or conflict.
Emotional Numbing – Disconnecting from emotions as a way to avoid pain, often leading to difficulty feeling joy or connection.
Hyper-Independence – Struggling to ask for help or trust others, believing you must handle everything alone.
Perfectionism – Feeling an intense pressure to be flawless to gain validation or avoid criticism.
Over-Responsibility – Taking on more than your share in relationships or work, feeling an obligation to fix or manage situations.
How These Patterns Show Up
These trauma-driven behaviors can impact different areas of life. Consider how these patterns show up in your life.
Relationships: Struggles with intimacy, difficulty setting boundaries, or cycles of unhealthy dynamics.
Work: Burnout, overworking to prove worth, or fear of failure preventing growth.
Self-Care: Avoiding rest, neglecting emotional needs, or feeling guilt when prioritizing yourself.
A Somatic Practice to Shift Trauma Patterns
Bringing the body into healing is essential for lasting transformation. One simple yet powerful somatic practice to begin shifting these patterns is grounding:
Grounding Exercise: Anchoring into Safety
Find a Comfortable Position – Sit or stand with your feet firmly planted on the ground. Pause and notice.
Breathe Deeply – Inhale through your nose, feeling your belly expand, and exhale slowly through your mouth.
Notice Sensations – Tune into your feet pressing into the floor, the weight of your body, and any physical sensations that arise.
Use Visualization – Imagine roots growing from your feet into the earth, anchoring you in safety and stability.
Affirm Safety – Repeat to yourself: "I am safe in this moment. I am grounded. I am supported." Create an affirmation that is connected to your experience.

Embracing Change
Healing from trauma patterns is a journey, not a destination. As you begin to bring awareness to these patterns and practice grounding, you create space for new, healthier ways of relating to yourself and the world. Over time, with patience and self-compassion, you can break free from old survival strategies and step into a life of greater ease, connection, and authenticity.
