![Trying to be the perfect therapist nearly broke me.
Not because I didn’t care.
But because I cared in a way that cost me my health and vitality.
I believed I had to give more, know more, be more, do more. I believed responsibility for healing lived with me.
So I stayed in my head always thinking, tracking, fixing while my body quietly carried the weight.
What I didn’t realize then is that the same pattern showing up in my work was the one shaping my life and impacting my relationships.
Over-functioning.
Self-abandonment.
Safety through effort.
My worth was tied to the way I showed up, the way I performed.
Slowly I began to crash.
My health was suffering.
The coping skills that always worked so well for me were no longer helping.
This was more than burnout. I was doing ALL of the things to change my schedule to shift my work and still felt like I just could not keep up.
It wasn’t until I slowed down enough to feel what was happening inside me that things began to shift.
Not by doing more.
But by listening.
Somatic practices allowed me to slow down, to feel and to have the space [and regulation] to be able to listen.
Parts work helped me to unpack the beliefs and layers of protection that were keeping me in the same old patterns.
Gradually I built a relationship with my body and my parts.
One where I could sense when I was pushing, bracing, or disappearing.
Where I could pause and listen to the wisdom that already existed within me.
Now I can recognize when I have drifted too far or when my schedule is too full.
It was never about being regulated all of the time or about being the perfect therapist.
It was always about being present with myself and with my clients.

![It isn't easy.
In fact carving out time for myself, for my own practices has been REALLY hard for me for a long time.
I do okay for a bit and then something happens to throw off my rhythm and it is a struggle to find the space again.
The past year my self practices have been almost non-existent. That is a story for another day...
I am leaning into what feels hard around creating time and space for myself. Looking at the beliefs and old patterns.
The "work first" belief or the "I will have time after I finish [fill in with any and every task on my never ending list]".
My people pleasing parts really want to make sure everything else is done before they will calm enough to give space for play, fun, creativity, even taking care of myself.
But I am trying this a different way. I am holding this time and space as sacred. Not to be interrupted by ANYTHING.
In the process I am witnessing what feels hard, what parts need tending or care when the resistance to take care of myself first shows up.
The practice is to just show up. No rules about what that looks like or what requirements about what has to be done.
Just show up and work with what is present in that moment. Do what feels good for my body and soul in that moment.
In the process I know I am teaching my nervous system something new and I am reworking the messages and beliefs about taking care of myself.
I have been frustrated with this because I worked with this part and belief SO much a few years ago. But this is a new layer, there is something ready to breakthrough. I can feel it.
This is what Embodiment looks like for me in this season.
